The Origin of Evil is a delectable comic thriller that plays out like a version of The Talented Mr Ripley and also boasts terrific Agatha Christie-style plot twists, but, by the time of its delicious final reel, The Origins of Evil is a movie all of its own. Laure Calamy (Call My Agent!) plays cash-strapped Stéphane, who pretends to be the long-lost daughter of the affluent Serge (Jacques Weber) in order to con her way into his life. While Serge's family suspects a cuckoo in the nest, Stéphane finds herself caught in the middle of the clan's own war. Calamy is superb, and she is brilliantly supported by Weber as the increasingly monstrous father, Dominique Blanc as his dizzy but not daft wife, and Doria Tillier as the frosty daughter quick to spot the interloper. A gripping and witty film in which nothing is quite as it seems.
